Just four years ago Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life made its world premiere at the Festival de Cannes and took home the Palme d’Or. Every cinephile, including myself, was in awe with the astonishing arrival of the incandescent Jessica Chastain. Her performance in the Tree of Life was a breakthrough for this A-list talent. But there was another incredibly gifted young actor who made his debut performance in this film, when he was just about 5 years old! His name is Tye Sheridan. And since the Tree of Life, this Sheridan kid has consistently starred in acclaimed independent films…and is constantly being praised for his dynamic, natural acting abilities. He keeps getting better and better and EVERY director wants to work with him. Next summer, Tye Sheridan is set to star in the blockbuster X-Men: Apocalypse and will play the younger version of Cyclops.

So let’s take a look at this 18 year-old actor’s resume of fantastic films:

Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life

While Tye Sheridan’s role is small in this critically lauded masterpiece, he did work with the great film auteur Terrence Malick. Actors that have been in this business for 30 years can’t even say that.

Jeff Nichols’s Mud

Considered to be Sheridan’s breakthrough role and rightfully so. He completely out-acted Oscar winners Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon in this artfully made, modern-day Huckleberry Finn tale. It was one of my favorite films of that year and Tye Sheridan’s best performance to date.

David Gordon Green’s Joe

A well-made film by David Gordon Green (Pineapple Express & Prince Avalanche) that features a rare stellar turn from Nicholas Cage and yet another film that proves Tye Sheridan’s worth as an actor.

Kyle Patrick Alvarez’s The Stanford Prison Experiment

This Sundance award-winning film is an extremely disturbing adaptation of a very real experiment (one that I actually learned about in college). But if you could sit through this harrowing experience, you will be rewarded with an outstanding cast of young male actors tearing up the screen with standout work from Sheridan, in particular. He creates one of the most striking, emotionally potent shots in the entire film with just a pillow. You can probably catch a glimpse of it in the trailer.

Finally, coming out this November is Rick Alverson’s Entertainment and it is suppose to be a knockout. And I don’t think I’ve seen Tye Sheridan look like this before. Which further proves how versatile of an actor he’s becoming. He’s on his way to becoming the next Leo DiCaprio. Yeah, Sheridan is that good. Check out the trailer and watch all of Sheridan’s great performances.
