Faults had its world premiere at last year’s SXSW Film Festival and writer/director Riley Stearns might have crafted one of the most unpredictable films I’ve ever seen. Just when you think you know who the cat and dog is, he pulls the rug right under you. All I’m going to say about the plot is that this man named Ansel (Leland Orser) has been hired by a couple to de-program their brainwashed, cult member daughter, Claire (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). The less you know the better. The directing, writing, and editing are all highly impressive and original. It’s hilariously horrifying and I loved the jump cuts! Leland Orser and Mary Elizabeth Winstead give extraordinary performances that deserve awards consideration. They both run the color spectrum of emotions in this film; it’s must-see acting.
By the end of the film, I felt as if I was hypnotized and questioned my own morals and beliefs. It’s no surprise that the producers of this film also produced You’re Next and The Guest, two other wildly inventive horror/thriller films. The future looks bright for Stearns and his two faultless leads. What an incredible film.
